Debra: Day Into Night

[Photos: Ari Seth Cohen, Text: Maayan Zilberman]

One of the qualities we love most about our magnificent friend Debra is her ability to make casual garments look like evening wear and vice versa. We spent the day together recently, and since a day with Debra so easily turns into a multi-activity affair, it was important to dress suitably for "Day Into Night".
Debra says she likes to layer a lot of "like fabrics" so the look is pulled together and not too bulky. For a morning walk by Gramercy Park, she pulled together this look with an anorak from H&M, a "gifted" ruffle-collar windbreaker from Victor & Rolf, and layered purple leather gloves.
Debra really stays true to her philosophy that if you don't spend much on clothes, you can have more fun with them and not feel precious about mixing and matching.
Without the anorak, her afternoon outfit is perfect for sitting at ABC Carpet & Home (one of her favorite spots for tea). She loves the ruffled collars in these nylon fabrics, because they retain their shape while being suitable for the day's drizzly rain. I love these kinds of fabrics too, nylons (or parachute fabrics) that are traditionally used for athletic wear, but here they are made to look luxurious.
Debra tells me one of her favorite pieces is this navy blue shirt dress that ties at the waist. It's great because it gives the illusion of wearing either a skirt or a jacket, and can be worn like a shirt tied around the waist (see Proenza Schouler) or like a loose jacket (as per Rick Owens)...

As it got darker out we decided to sit in the beautifully renovated Rosebar at The Gramercy Park Hotel. The lighting was perfect for highlighting Debra's many ruffled collars, which taken into an evening setting, looked glamorous and regal.

What I love most about Debra here is how consistently she takes her mix of "thrifted and gifted" and "wears it without it wearing her".

"Gotta Go Babe"

This is one of the coolest guys I have ever run into not only because he of his amazing style but because he has the attitude and confidence to carry off his eccentric and classic look. He looks like a sailor just back from an adventure. This led me to ask him where he acquired the beautiful jewel around his neck and he replied, " I just thought it was cool man." Sometimes it takes the confidence that comes with age to be able to carry yourself with the humor and style this fellow exudes. After taking a few shots he remarked, "Gotta go babe," with a big smile on his face.I only hope to be as cool as this guy someday!

Japanese Style

This lovely and stylish woman came in the New Museum this week and we talked about her favorite brands Issey Miyake and Comme des Garcons. She prefers these Japanese labels for their artistry, and has been a fan of them for years. I hope she stops by again soon so we can talk more in depth about her style inspirations!

How To Dress Like A Gentleman

I saw this dapper man as I was strolling on 5th Ave by Central Park. His bright red tie and coordinated pocket square immediately caught my eye and I asked if I could take a quick photo of him. He was in a hurry but let me snap a few shots before continuing on down the the road.

Prada Intuition

[Photos: Ari Seth Cohen, Text: Maayan Zilberman]

In the fashion world, Prada is said to be the most prominent example of a new form of inward-directed luxury. While in decades past luxury was explicitly displayed, today an understated luxury is sought.
This woman whom we met yesterday exemplifies the very characteristics we all love in Miuccia Prada, the label's visionary designer. Ari and I love her array of subtle style references: Safari hat and jacket signify the luxury of travel while a surprising combination of prints showcases her confidence to play with clothes. It's her style intuition that reminds me most of Miuccia, who often shows off the looks she designs far better than any of the models on her runway.
It's her life experience and understanding of inward-luxury
(see Monday's interview with Debra and MaryAnn) that bring the clothes to life.
Being Italian has something to do with it, we're sure. But either way...we'll be Miu Miu to this lady's Prada any day of the week!

After Chanel

[Photos and Text Ari Seth Cohen]

I met this amazing 79 year old woman on my way home from a photo shoot uptown. I noticed her patent leather hat and raincoat from afar and when I saw how unbelievably gorgeous she was I knew I had to ask for her photo. She told me that she wasn't very photogenic, but I assured her that she looked great. When she took off her coat she revealed a gorgeous Prada blouse and beautiful Chanel pearls. I asked her what her career was and she told me that she used to be a therapist but she only had three clients and she cured them right away. After that she became a stylist for a number of years as you can see from her classic and flawless taste. We lamented that people don't dress up anymore and she told me that next time we meet she'll have some tips for the younger generations!
